August 28th - BVFD - Address Markers..... Why do you need them?

First off I could like to take this chance to commend Franklin
Township for seeing that there is a problem with house numbers in the
Township and then stepping up to the plate to address it. All
residents in Franklin Township should be receiving an orange post card
in reference to the numbering of your residence. There has been a long
standing Township ordinance requiring every residence to have min. 3"
reflective numbers at the end of their driveway and also if the
driveway is shared for each house to also have reflective numbers on
it. This ordinance can be viewed at www.franklintwp.us . The
Township has set the date of December 30th, 2008 as the date for the
  ordinance to be met.

These numbers are very important in the time of an emergency. Many
houses do not have their address shown at the end of the lane, the
numbers are to small to read, the numbers are facing the wrong
direction or numbers have fallen off over the years. As you can
imagine this causes a major problem when emergency responders are
looking for YOUR HOME. For some reason over the years many address’s
have become out of numerical order and this causes even more confusion
with out your home being properly numbered.

There are many ways to meet the code. Many residents have purchased
the green address signs with white reflective numbers. If you wish to
purchase one of these signs you can either contact myself at the
Buchanan Valley Fire Department, or contact the Cashtown Community Fire
Company (334-3838) who is also selling signs as a fund raiser for $15
each. If you are elderly and need assistance with putting the signs
up, the Volunteers at BVFD will come out and assist you. If you would
rather take on the project yourself, I checked Lowes today and the
reflective numbers are 68 cents each.

There have been some calls already to the Station thinking that this is
just another way that the Fire Department is looking for money. That
is not at all true, you can purchase these numbers for less than $6 for
the average address at the Hardware Store. $6 is not to much to ask for
with the average house in this area being around $250K.

Listed below is my email address as well as home phone number if you
have any questions or need assistance.

Thank You
  Michael D. Spielman

August 13th -FIRE-  At around 2230 hours Box 27-1 was sounded for a shed fire in the 200 Block of Church Road.  Deputy Chief Parr arrived on the scene with a working 20x20 shed.  Engine Tanker 27 arrived w/6 and placed the 350 in service and extinguished the shed that had a fair amount of straw in it.  D/C 27 held the Box to Company 27 and had Engine 4-1 (Cashtown) transfer to Company 27.  FM1 investigated the fire.  This was the first fire with the new Pierce Wagon.
