The Buchanan Valley Vol. Fire Dept. is pleased to announce that we have secured an AFG grant via FEMA.  This is the second AFG grant in two months that we have been awarded.  The AFG is a competitive grant process.  The grant is for $118,750.00; to be used to replace our current brush truck.

The brush truck that we are replacing is 34 years old and has seen better days.  Also, our current brush truck does not have working seat belts which causes a major safety issue to our Volunteers.  Our new "quick attack" unit will be designed to not only handle brush/wood/mountain fires, but also many other emergencies that present hard to access situations.  The new unit will also be equipped with a CAFS (compressed air foam system).

One important aspect of the AFG is to prove a need, but also to prove that a financial burden will not be placed on the department.  The grant is a 95% match and our department is responsible for 5%.  We would like to thank United States Senator Arlen Specter (http://specter.senate.gov/public) for his assistance with securing this much needed funding.

More info to come on this project.  Members watch the memo board or this site for Apparatus Demo's.

Jan 11th - Chimney Fire w/ Extension - BVFD got dispatched to Special Box 27-5-40 for a reported chimney fire.  While trying to enter the development, BVFD ran into extreme icy conditions. This caused a lot of trouble as the ice made it impossible to get a engine up the road.  After getting E27 stuck, the crew members on E27 grabbed as many tools and extinguishers as they could carry and started walking to the house. As additional crews arrived, they also grabbed some tools and started walking. After a 1/2 mile walk on the ice, E27 crew arrived at the house with fire showing side D.  Using an Axe and a dry chemical extinguisher, E27 got a knock on the fire.  SU 27 and Brush 5 fought their way up the icy road and we were able to extinguish the remaining fire.
